Oluwatoyin Oyekanmi, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Jollof Café {Pty} Limited. He is also the current Chairman of the Nigerian ruling party - the All-Progressives Congress {APC} (South Africa chapter).

Oluwatoyin has rich experience in the Media Industry with the establishment of TEM Productions {Pty} Limited in 2012, a firm that has been in full production of media content. He also has experience in the Public Relations field working as a Public Relations Specialist with the African Leadership Magazine, a South African-based International News Magazine.

Educationally, he graduated from the University of Abuja in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts {B.A} Degree in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management. There, for his distinguished leadership traits, he was elected the Director of Socials, Theatre Arts Students’ Association between 2009 and 2010. He was later elected President, of the Faculty of Arts Presidential Forum 2010/2011. Olatayo Muyideen SIYANBOLA is an educator under Mpumalanga Department of Education attached to Alfred Matshine MSTA.

He is currently the Head of Department of the institution where he is employed and the Cluster leader in his Circuit. He held the two positions for over 5 years. Olatayo has also been a Marker in Physical Sciences under the same department for over 6 years.

As a community-oriented individual, Olatayo registered a Foundation in Nigeria under the CAC of Nigeria called Siyanbola O. M Foundation, using it as a platform to service the Nigerian community, especially in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. For Olatayo, community work is a passion.

Olatayo has this to say about his community works in the Bushbuckridge area of Mpumalanga province:

"I believe the greatest responsibility of any human is to serve humanity. Serving humanity is the best work of life. I have done a lot of community work with Nigerians and non-Nigerians in Bushbuckridge. I was the only Nigerian that gave palliative services to lots of people, both Nigerians and non-Nigerians, within Bushbuckridge during the COVID-19."

EFIONG Thomas Akpan is a US-trained food technologist. He studied Food Science and Technology at the California State University, Fresno, California, US. He started his career in the US working McDonald's restaurant while attending university. Efiong worked his way up to work for McDonald's Corporation headquarters in Chicago. In 1995, he was among the team selected by McDonald's to bring McDonald's to South Africa.

As one of the pioneers, Efiong was in charge of training over 200 South Africans in New Zealand, Australia, London, and the USA before they opened stores in South Africa. For his long-time service with the brand, he was honored as a Golden Arch Partner (No. 366) of the McDonald's family.

In 2000, Efiong stopped working for McDonald's and opened his own McDonald's franchise in Polokwane, where he employed over 60 South Africans. While operating McDonald's, he was able to build a two-bedroom house in Seshego and build a community hall in the village (Mothiba) for the locals to use for free.

Efiong is one of the founders of the Patriot Club of Nigeria in South Africa. He finally retired in 2016 and sold his McDonald's back to the corporation to take care of his sick wife, Darlene, until 2021, when she passed away.

Efiong’s other community development includes building a gym in the village next to Mankweng in Limpopo province.

Taiwo Kazeem Olansile is the director and founder of African Renaissance Voices, a group of 14 African nationals (Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Gabon, Burundi, Ethiopia, Liberia, Senegal, Jamaica and Ivory Coast).

 

He is also the National Deputy Organizing Secretary for The Nigerian Citizens Association of South Africa (NICASA), an apex organization for the Nigerian community. Through NICASA, Kazeem has served and represented Nigerians in South Africa. He was part of a leading team that distributed over 500 (five hundred) COVID-19 palliatives to the Nigerian community in KwaZulu-Natal in 2020.

 

He was the Nigerian representative of the Ugu International Film Festival 2022; the Nigerian representative at the 2021 UHURU at the Wushwini Pan African Centre and one of the Nigerian representatives at the Kurudi 2019. Kazeem has also taken part in the community and international development programs that help in building bridges in Africa.

 

Kazeem composed the “Irin Ajo Eda” (Human's Journey) which is being performed in 13 different African languages- (a musical feat that is probably will be the first of its kind) by a group of 14 African nationals (Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Gabon, Burundi, Ethiopia, Liberia, Senegal, Jamaica and Ivory Coast). The song is ready to be launched by September 2023.

 

Along with other members of the 13 African nationals, Kazeem performed the song at the 2023 Africa Day Celebration at the Harry Gwala Stadium (Pietermaritzburg) for the Department of Sport, Art & Culture, showcasing African pride and heritage

 

Kazeem continues to engage in youth development and empowerment by giving exposure to young talents and giving them platforms such as the one provided in the recording and production of the pan-African song Irin ajo idea (Human's Journey).

 

Also, Kazeem’s concept of "Unlimited Talent Factory" has successfully groomed and trained over 70 talents and still counting. Using the power of music and music production, recently, Kazeem worked with over 80 Nigerians, and all of them got paid for the international movie "The Power" with Go Big production.

 

Kazeem is also the producer of The Unexpected, a story written by a local Zulu young man from KwaZulu-Natal’s hostel in Kwamashu which he took for production through AM Visual Production and now viewing at Cinetie.com.

 

Kazeem is also a member of the Anti-GBV campaign team of South Africa through which he is making his voice heard and being featured in the SA media.

Professor Abejide Ade-Ibijola holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence — program comprehension) from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 2016.

Prior, he had bagged a Bachelor’s Honours degree (with First Class Honours) in Computer Science, and a Master’s in Advanced Computer Science (with Distinction in Research) — serious games and AI. He is currently a Full Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Applications at the Johannesburg Business School (JBS), University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. He is rated by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, and he has published 80+ articles in recognized outlets on AI algorithms, and innovations for solving real-world problems.

At UJ, he is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, serves on the Teacher Portfolio Assessment Committee (TPAC), and is also a member of the Senate’s Teaching and Learning Committee.

Abejide is also a Visiting Distinguished Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the School of Business, Woxsen University, Hyderabad, India (also an advisory board member of the AI Research Centre at Woxsen), and holds several academic, consulting, and advisory positions around the world.

In his 15 years of experience, he has taught several modules at all levels and supervised master’s and doctoral candidates to completion. Outside of academia, Abejide has worked in the software industry (across domains such as financial markets, serious games in public health and education, and technology consulting), and created several innovations for the government of South Africa. Abejide has won 65 major teaching, research, and innovation awards and secured over R12 million rands in funding for research, innovation, and social development (training of youth technopreneurs, and unemployed graduates).

He is the winner of the UJ CBE Dean’s Top Senior Lecturer Award 2018 (in a faculty of 338 academics), a Two-time Winner of the UJ Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Awards for the Innovation of the Year 2019 (Valued at R500, 000.00), and Teaching Excellence 2020 (Valued at R150, 000.00).

Abejide is also a winner at South Africa’s Department of Public Service (DPSA) Ignite Hack Innovation Award 2018, the winner of the SA Department of Communications Living 4IR Hackathon Overall Best Innovation of 2019, Two South Africa’s State IT Agency (SITA) Public Service Innovation Awards in 2019. In 2020, he secured software licenses for the entire UJ community, worth over $1.5 Billion US Dollars.

In 2023, he was named twice as a finalist for the Africa Tech Leader of the Year Award, and his social project (GRIT Lab Africa), as the Africa Educational Technology Award at the Africa Tech Week Awards in Cape Town, South Africa.

At the JBS, Abejide is the Founder and Lead of the Research Group on Data, Artificial Intelligence, and Innovations for Digital Transformation, the Director of the Postgraduate Diploma Programme, and the Chairperson of the Centre for Entrepreneurship’s Advisory Board. He also heads the Innovation Lab of the JBS, known to produce immersive experiences, video games, mobile/web app solutions, and a range of algorithmic solutions.

Abejide has invented several technological tools across the spectrum (virtual reality experiences, video games, AI algorithms, mobile and web applications, etc.). Two notable commercialized products from his inventions are The Learn and Earn Mobile App: This App allows students to sell products for three companies (Tupperware, Table Charm, and Avon Justine). During the 2019 academic year, 390 students used this app, generating a turnover of R3 million. This resulted in R750 000 paid out to the students as a commission. This App has made more returns year-on-year thereafter. Teaching and Module Evaluation Web App: This App saves the University of Johannesburg exactly R2 million rounds annually in the software license that was previously paid to a company in the Netherlands. The App facilitates the teaching and module evaluation for the entire UJ community. 50,000 students and about 10,000 staff members use this app. Abejide has authored over 50 proprietary technology tools, with some undergoing commercialization at UJ.

Abejide is the Founder and chairperson of GRIT Lab Africa (a social project for training young Africans in Grit and programming). In GRIT Lab Africa, Abejide mentors 116 young people across 38 higher institutions of learning in 11 African countries (Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe). At the University of Johannesburg, he currently mentors 60+ students and has directly mentored 1000+ students in the last seven years.

In 2022, he paid out R1, 111, 587.38 in wages to 33 students for work-integrated learning, while training these students to become software engineers across a diverse range of technologies. Abejide is the publisher of The Kingsman Academic Magazine, a publication that showcases the technological innovation of his mentees.

Benjamin Oluwamuyiwa Olorunfemi is a first-year Ph.D. student at the University of Johannesburg Research Center for Cyber-physical Food, Energy, and Water Systems.

He has an MEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. His previous research is in the performance improvement of solar energy production.

His publication topics include internet-based cleaning systems and innovations in dirt-detection solar panels. Currently, he is investigating new procedures and technologies to solve the fruit sorting and grading process using computer vision and machine learning algorithms.

Opeoluwa is a vibrant and industrious Quantity Surveyor with experience in Consultancy and Contracting. He completed his Bachelor of Technology degree at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria (FUTA) in 2015.

Opeoluwa developed an interest in research during his undergraduate days, spurring him to write articles and reviews. He represented FUTA at the ReCon2 Student Essay Writing and Presentation competition organized by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), which attracted contestants from various higher institutions across Nigeria and came first. The Federal University of Technology, Akure, presented him with a productivity and excellence award for his contribution to excellence and research in the institution.

He is a probationer member of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors with three (3) years of experience in the Nigerian construction industry where he was involved in cost management of various construction projects worth over $250m. He is also a registered member of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors with four (4) years of experience in the South African construction industry, where he has teamed up with colleagues to win tenders worth about $25m.

Opeoluwa completed his Master's programme in a record time of 13 months with a distinction in Quantity Surveying from the University of Johannesburg in 2019, having published over 20 research articles in reputable journals and conference outlets.

Presently, Opeoluwa is working part-time as a Researcher and Temporary Lecturer at the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, the University of Johannesburg, where he just completed his Ph.D. programme in Construction Management with over fifty (50) publications in reputable journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings.

He also works part-time as a Quantity Surveyor/Quality Control Officer at a construction company based in Centurion, South Africa. His current research interest is focused on applying blockchain technology to the different business processes of the construction industry. This incited him to take part in the 2020 blockchain technology summer school hosted by the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Afterward, he became a certified blockchain architect by the Blockchain Council, USA.

Opeoluwa received the Academic Rising Star award at The BIM Africa Innovation Awards 2021 as a testament to his research prowess over the years. Also, the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Johannesburg awarded him the Best Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying for the 2022 academic year. He also bagged the overall Best Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty, which led to him being presented with the "Recognition of Exceptional Academic Achievement in Doctoral Studies - 2022" award in May 2023.

Taiwo Kazeem Olansile is an Actor, Model, and Stylist.

As an actor, he was part of the cast of the ETV soapie- Imbewu- where he acted as the Nigeria business owner aired on ETV 1. Taiwo was also featured as the Nigeria Bishop on the South African soapie- Uzalo aired on SABC 1. He has also acted in the soapie- The Unexpected- a featured film presently airing on Cinetie.com.

Taiwo is part of the cast of the movie Reyka (Season ii) as Ula. It is a West African Street mafia on ShowMax (Mnet). Taiwo has also worked with casting agencies like Let's Face It, Go Big Production, AM Visual Productions, OCA, and a few others.

A Model, Taiwo started his Modelling in 2012 in South Africa. He has recorded over 30 advisements to his name so far. Taiwo has appeared in Absa Bank TV commercials, Flying Fish TV commercials, Sasco Bread TV commercials, D'julio TV commercials, and some others. Taiwo is recognized as a professional fashion, pageant, and ramp model with broad experience and recognition in the industry. Taiwo has recently introduced Nigeria's ‘Agba’ style with Zulu embroidery, an addition to the creativity.

Okosun Ehi Daniel is a stand-up comedian and creative personality. He has been in the creative and comedy spaces for over a decade in Nigeria before relocating to South Africa.

Okosun moved to South Africa in 2017 and continued to carve a niche for himself in the entertainment industry, headlining and hosting many major events both as a stand-up comedian and Master of ceremony.

Okosun’s success in the comedy space has established and earned him a platform on which he hosts his annual comedy event in the city of Johannesburg, where he also features several established and upcoming comedians. Okosun has hosted a lot of comedy club gigs, anchored wedding ceremonies, and planned and managed comedy events. Jeffrey Uzoma Fidelis is an avid Creative Ideator, Visual storyteller, Writer and Director. He has over a decade of experience in the event, film, and television industry. Barritone Tunde Adigun was born in Lagos. He started his music career as a producer in 2005. As a producer, Baritone produced a hit song in Nigeria titled “Onpe” by Destiny in 2007. Baritone has also worked with top artistes such as 9ice. In 2014, Baritone produced a song titled “Oyin” by Niniola. Mr. Prince Nda Okwu is a gospel recording and award-winning artist. Prince has contributed to the gospel music ministry with great performances and musical productions for over two decades as a gospel music artist. He also collaborates frequently with other gospel artists in South Africa. In addition to his performances, Prince has organized and hosted successful music concerts and worship experience shows with other artists.

Mr. Prince Nda Okwu is a gospel recording and award-winning artist. Prince has contributed to the gospel music ministry with great performances and musical productions for over two decades as a gospel music artist. He also collaborates frequently with other gospel artists in South Africa.

In addition to his performances, Prince has organized and hosted successful music concerts and worship experience shows with other artists. One of the highlights of his music career has been receiving an award in the United States.

Hammed Alimi Ganiyu whose stage name is Medosky is a frontline, sensational Nigerian Afro-hip-hop musician based in South Africa. A strong indication of his musical maturity and popularity is evidenced in his being the first Nigerian artist whose music was featured on South African TV station MZANZI MAGIC and the only Nigerian artiste who has continually enjoyed airtime on the station. John Oluwafemi, popularly known as Frenzyoffixial, is a South Africa-based Nigerian musician whose musical talents manifest versatility combining the roles of a producer, singer, and songwriter. His genre of music includes Amapiano and Afrobeats. His diversity and talent allow him to create any kind of music, and this has enabled him to not only make music in Nigeria but also to relocate to South Africa where he has always admired the sounds of legends like, Oskido, Mafikhizolo, DJ Tira to name a few.

The culture, the music, and his background influenced "PIANOJOLLOF." He said in an interview that the song "PIANOJOLLOF" is as enjoying Jollof rice and Amapiano music.

In the last few years, Frenzyoffixial’s brand of music has grown and made inroads into the hearts of the South African music scene. This has continually opened doors of collaboration for him with South African artistes. His recent collaboration is a song titled USHESHE featuring two highly talented South African artistes Bizizi & kaygee.

Saint Seaba (whose real name is Eze Chidi-Ebube Seaba) is a South African-based Nigerian artist, producer, and songwriter. He was born and raised in Satellite Town, Lagos (Nigeria) where he started his musical journey.

He attended Bookman Academy in Satellite Town for his secondary school education while honing his craft as a singer by joining the Church choir. Saint Seaba started out as a rapper due to his big brother's influence but soon discovered his path as a singer. In 2009, he dropped his debut album titled SHUMA. It is a 16-track album that had on it renowned artists in the Nigerian music Industry; talking about the likes of 2face Idibia, OJB Jezreel, Timaya, Baba Dee , W4 , jazzman Olofin, and Rocksteady.

Under the mentorship of the late Nigerian hip-hop superstar- Sound Sultan, Saint Seaba was made to see other sides to music; as a talent and also as a business. He relocated to South Africa to Study Digital Music Production and Sound Engineering. He enrolled at EMENDY COLLEGE (Pretoria) to learn more about his passion.

Saint Seaba has to his credit an album and many singles among which are songs titled: Panadol, No Vex, Pay my Money and Catch Fun. He bagged two awards at the Pretoria Music Awards 2012 as Artist of the Year and Best Pop Single.

Saint Seaba’s works have enjoyed huge admiration and success within the South Africa music scene. This has earned him a number of collaboration with South African musicians. A recent collaboration seeing him working with one of the frontline South African hip-hop artistes- EMTEE on a song titled INSPIRE SOMEBODY.

Ikusasalethu Youth Development Project also known as IYDP was established in 2013 and formally registered with the Department of Social Development as an NPO in 2016, to profoundly impact the lives of unemployed youth by mentioning, supporting, and encouraging their livelihood with the aim of responding to issues of youth development, poverty alleviation, the promoting of social cohesion and relieving social tension foreign nationals and South Africans by creating a sustainable solution to combat unrest caused by Xenophobia and unemployment.

IYDP is focused on strengthening the capacities of stakeholders at a national level to prevent violence and unrest by advancing social dialogue to enhance relationships, improve understanding, and involve communities to align solutions with locals and foreign.

Lee Ann Lancaster is an experienced business leader and innovator within the Financial Services and Fintech Arenas. She is currently the Executive Head of cross-border Payments at Sasai- a Fintech company offering digital financial services to Africa’s mobile consumers. Before joining Sasai, Lee was the Chief Revenue Officer at Floatpays. She has also worked with Mama Money as its Chief Growth Officer for many years.

Lee has a postgraduate degree in Management practice from the Graduate Business School of the University of Cape Town. She also holds an MBA degree from Stellenbosch University.

Lee has extensive experience in helping global organizations grow and scale, thereby driving organizational profitability through product and market development, multi-continent expansion, fiscal discipline, and maximizing sales distribution. She is passionate about impacting the socio-economic status of marginalized communities through progressive financial services.

She holds several board positions, all focused on empowering women within Fintech arenas across Africa and Europe. She is currently the Chairperson (South Africa) African Women in FinTech & Payments (AWFP).

Over the years, Lee has demonstrated excellence in supporting Nigeria as a community by using her professional experience and circles to raise awareness and support for events that promote Nigerian values and put the country in a positive light in South Africa. Dr. Oladayo Ibidola Mgudlwa is a pediatrician with a special interest in allergology who currently works in East London, primarily in the public sector but with a small private practice focusing on allergy services.

Oladayo is a member of the South African Colleges of Medicine (CMSA) and a fellow of the College of Paediatricians. She is a senior lecturer at Walter Sisulu University, where she teaches and participates in the final year medical student exit exams. She is an examiner for the CMSA Paediatric Fellowship, Diploma in Child Health, and Diploma in Allergology exams.

She is also a member of the South African Medical Association, the South African Allergy Association, and the World Allergy Organization. She also serves on the boards of the Allergy Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) and the Bola Awotedu Foundation (an NGO established in memory of her late father (Prof AA Awotedu) to assist in the training of doctors in Asthma and Allergy, which was his passion).

Dr. Oladayo Ibidola Mgudlwa says of her lifelong learning and passion:

I enjoy learning as much as I enjoy teaching, so I enrolled in a two-year part-time course with Calvary Leadership College last year, which will end in November.

Adetola Bakinson was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and attended the prestigious Queens College Yaba, where she graduated with her 0 levels, also known as WAEC, before going on to the esteemed University of Lagos to pursue a career in information technology.

She has accomplished a lot in her career and continues to work in various IT fields. Adetola has over ten years of experience in software quality assurance and IT project management at various organizations, and has made significant contributions to the Sub-Saharan African financial application sector through various project development. Among them is the successful completion of the Nedbank-SAP transition, widely regarded as one of the largest projects in Nedbank's history. (Implementing at 1 billion rand per module and delivering three modules successfully).

She has been recognized for her roles in software quality assurance, IT project management, client engagement, and service delivery, and she continues to apply her skills and expertise in the delivery of many projects, including the Core Banking and Billing systems, various Insurance applications, IT managed services, and other IT related projects, ensuring end-to-end software quality development and assurance. In her career, she has also added her touch of excellence to reputable organizations such as Assupol, Vodacom, BankServ, and Momentum.

She currently works as a Director of Project Management for IT Operations in Software Quality Engineering and IT Service Management, collaborating with a variety of clients including King Price, Momentum, and the Afrocentric group, one of South Africa's largest medical aid brokers. One of her most recent accomplishments was saving a fifty million rand contract within four months of employment and exceeding annual results with stats not seen in the previous seven years.

When she is not making waves in the technology world, she is an award-winning poet and inspirational speaker.

As a survivor of gender violence and an activist, Adetola continues to fight GBV and child abuse and is a strong supporter of youth empowerment. She is the creator of the S.T.A.R. (Sore, Torn, and Recovering) project and the author of two best-selling books, 40 Days of Affirmation and Love and Other Emotions.

Adetola is also the founder of the online prayer ministry House of HEPHZIBAH.

Adetola's ability to speak and write poetry has propelled her to prominence in Africa and beyond. She has appeared on prominent TV shows such as Newsroom Africa, where she has taken her poetry and activism to new heights of enlightenment through speaking and poetry. 

Mrs. Opeoluwa Omor Oyebola known as Chef Omor, is a Nigerian-born Chef. Tonopkitchen (a West African Kitchen in South Africa) is owned and operated by her.

Chef Omor moved to South Africa with her family nine years ago and now lives here. She has 12 years of experience in the catering and hospitality sector and holds degrees from the Lagos State Catering School (Lagos, Nigeria), the International Hotel School, South Africa (IHS), and the Allison Diploma in Food Safety Management. She also holds a degree in mass communication from Lagos State University (LASU), a Higher Certificate in Adult Basic Education and Training from the University of South Africa (UNISA), and a Google certificate in Digital Marketing.

She is an award-winning chef with a passion for teaching, which inspired her to recently give a free online baking class for children and teenagers (funbakers with Chef Omor).

Khatija, a non-Nigerian who is married to a Nigerian (Mr. Kazeem Balogun) characterizes her 15-year marriage as "a living testament to the power of love and a connection that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries." Our journey is one of cohesion and tenacity.

To build a harmonious household for their three children, Khatija and her Nigerian husband have made an effort to meld their respective cultures. She claims that this demonstrates her husband's dedication to love and inclusivity.

In terms of movies, food, and travel, Khatija and her husband have a lot of shared experiences and memories. These range from exhilarating lion-safari adventures to surprise gastronomic discoveries in Germany. They also share a common love of movies.

Matevhu Constance Bajomo is a Health Facility Planner Specialist Consultant with 29 years of healthcare experience. She holds a Post Graduate qualification in Health Technology Management and a Post Graduate qualification in Public Health; a qualification in Advanced Project Management and an MBA and several qualifications in healthcare planning and design.

 

She began her career as a Registered Nurse, working for 5 years in a public institution and another 5 years in a private facility before embarking on a 7-year career in health insurance as a Case Manager and Clinical Auditor. Her Advanced Project Management certification aided her advancement to senior management as a General Manager at a Healthcare Cleaning Company. She was a Deputy Director responsible for Health Facilities Planning at the Western Cape Department of Health Infrastructure. Matevhu eventually became the Managing Director of Zwonaka Engineering and Initiatives, where he was in charge of health initiatives. She is currently employed as a health Facility Planner Specialist consultant with Sakhiwo Health Solutions Consulting. 

 

Matevhu Constance Bajomo’s NON-NIGERIAN PARTNER TESTIMONY

 

As a non-Nigerian married to a Nigerian spouse (Dr. Abiodun Sunday Bajomo), the distinctiveness of being married to a Nigerian reveals itself in the reality of being married to the entire family and friends of the Nigerian. Furthermore, the uniqueness of marrying a Nigerian rests in the realisation that the partners are unique compatible human beings who are friends and each other's specifications.

 

Matevhu thinks it a significant problem for her to have grown up in a household of two parents and six siblings before marrying into an extended Nigerian family with three wives and 14 children, as well as numerous friends. Matevhu, on the other hand, adds that she has managed to look after everyone for the past 27 years to the best of her ability in a way that is regarded miraculous- beyond her comprehension.

 

Marital Achievements

 

Building a wonderful home together and making it a comfortable, inviting home for our two beautiful children, Felicia, 27, and Jonathan, 20.

 

Have faith in the power of education. We have always encouraged one another to further our education while working and raising our wonderful family. I supported my spouse through his two master's degrees, and he did the same for me until I finished mine. Supported spouse in starting his own business and in building his successful practices which he has been running for more than 20 years. Supported him in diversifying the family investments into properties, shares, etc.

 

We have ensured that our children understand Nigerian culture by taking them to Nigeria every other year since they were born. During these trips, we make sure they spend time in the villages, sleep, and eat with everyone until they are old enough to comprehend their heritage.

I have supported my husband in taking care of his siblings, nephews, and nieces.

 

For the past 27 years, I have been taking care of my husband's health.

 

We have supported my husband's involvement in Nigerian Community Associations by hosting some meetings in our house and catering for them.

 

I have attended any of the Nigerian Community Association events by my husband's side and encouraged him to offer our monetary support. As a result of our successful and long-lasting marriage, we have become role models for younger Nigerians who would like to marry South African women. We are frequently invited to be part of Lobola negotiation teams.

 

Stigma–the notion that all Nigerians are crooks. I got married in 1996 when marrying a Nigerian man was not yet a thing. It was still being frowned upon. I had many people whom I look up to who spoke to me against marrying my husband and tried to convince my parents not to let me do it. But because I am a very free-spirited human being, I ignored all the noises and listened to my heart, and I did it. I was also still very young and naïve since I got married at 24.

 

In sickness and in health–In 2005 my husband was diagnosed with a heart problem and had to go for a big heart operation instantly. I had to be strong and take care of him until he recovered. He could not work for +- than 9 months and I had to be that pillar of strength for him and take care of the family.

 

COVID-19 -In 2021, we both had COVID. I first had it and while I was in isolation, he started having symptoms and was also very sick and needed to isolate in another room. Our daughter, who was taking care of both of us, started panicking that her dad was getting worse. I had to grow up and get out of my isolation to take care of him and release our daughter. By God’s grace, we both recovered.

Itumeleng Dibakwane-Odusanya is a banker who has worked with Standard Bank for 8 years in the Department of Internal Audit as a Manpower and Training Manager. In addition to her banking career, she is also a Home Executive and a Farmer. Itumeleng is also active in the events and catering business, specializing in Nigerian events.

Itumeleng Dibakwane-Odusanya, who is married to Dr. Ademuyiwa Odusanya, a Nigerian partner, shares her thoughts on their marriage as a non-Nigerian.

 

As an Ijebu wife and active member of the Ogun State Indigenous Organisation, I have been married to Dr. Ademuyiwa Odusanya for 18 years and we are blessed with four boys, including twins, which earned me the nickname "Mama Ibeji”. Presently, I am a Home Executive and Farmer, but previously worked for 8 years as a Manpower and Training Manager in the Internal Audit Department at Standard Bank. Additionally, I occasionally venture into the Events and Catering Business, catering primarily to Nigerian events. I am also active on social media, where I go by the username @mrsOdus. My hobbies include baking, cooking, painting, watching movies, dancing, doing crossword puzzles, soduku, and interior decorating. I am a devoted Christian and passionate about giving back to the community through various charitable activities and events.

Professor Towobola was born a prince from one of the five ruling houses of Abeokuta (Ogun State) – the Towobola-Ilo ruling House. He began his educational career at Government College, Ibadan in 1960 and after his secondary education, he spent four years at the School of Pathology, University College Hospital in Ibadan. Thereafter, he proceeded, in 1969, to the UK to further his education.

Prof Towobola qualified as a Clinical Biochemist in 1972 at the Courtauld Institute of Biochemistry (London). After a few years back in Nigeria, Prof Towobola went back to the UK to complement his higher education. He received a Master’s degree (MSc) in Steroid Endocrinology, at Leeds University (1976); a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in research, at the same university in 1979 - with a study on hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women. He finally moved to the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (Hammersmith Hospital) in London, where he successfully went through a Ph.D. programme which culminated in a doctorate degree from London University in 1984. Professor Towobola did a postdoctoral course in 1986 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (Maryland), USA, for which he was awarded a certificate of the Johns Hopkins International Education in Gynaecology and Obstetrics. 

During his four decades of dedication to clinical research, Professor Towobola worked with a colleague (Professor J.A.M. Otubu) to pioneer the establishment of reproductive technology at the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Jos University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State. He moved on as a Professor of Clinical Research to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Medical University of Southern Africa in Pretoria (MEDUNSA) in 1993 – an institution that is now known as Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. After his retirement in 2011, he was retained by the Department of Internal Medicine of the same institution, to continue his work till now, as a mentor for postgraduate clinical research students.

From his research work in the UK, Nigeria and South Africa, Professor Towobola has authored and co-authored eighty-five scientific articles, published in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented many of his research reports at conferences both locally and internationally. The publications from his work are in a variety of medical disciplines:  

Chemical Pathology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology, Neurology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Virology & Internal Medicine. Professor Towobola has mentored numerous postgraduate medical students to obtain Master of Science (MSc), and Master of Medicine (MMed) and has supervised three postgraduates to obtain PhD degrees in Obstetrics/Gynaecology and Virology.

In recognition of the work and expertise of Professor Towobola, he was appointed a member of the Medicine Regulatory Council of South Africa (the Medicine Control Council) from 2008 to 2015. He was a consultant to the Clinical Trials Committee of the MCC - a duty which he continues to carry out for the new regulatory body – the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority from 2015 till now.   

Allegorically, Prof Towobola is “Nigeria” personified. He was born in Jos, Plateau State, he was nurtured through the culture and heritage of the Egba people of Abeokuta, and he is married to a beautiful princess from the hinterland of Abia State (Ozi-Item). In 2006, Prof Towobola and his wife Chief (Mrs) Mary Towobola were honoured with chieftaincy titles by the Odum Autonomous Community of Ozi-Item (Bende, Abia State), in recognition of his devotion and support for the Igbo culture. By the same sentiment, Prof Towobola was honoured in 2022 by the Supreme Eze-in Council (An Apex Cultural and Traditional Institute of NDIGBO of South Africa), for his continued support for the culture, traditions and values of the Igbo people.  

Professor Olakunle Adewunmi Towobola lives with the strong hope that when his time is over, he will have made some contributions to humanity – especially to the lives of those who have crossed his professional path.  

Mrs. Ngozi Christiana Alabi is the Immigration Attaché at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Pretoria, South Africa.

Kapo's goldsmith skills have aided South Africa's higher education learning industry. From 2008 till the present, he worked as a part-time lecturer at the University of Johannesburg in Gauteng Province of South Africa. He has also worked as a part-time lecturer at Vaal University of Technology since 2012. Akapo Jewels Pty Ltd. also collaborated with MINTEK / KGABANE (Kgabane) to create a jewelry collection for display at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town in 2003. Kapo collaborated with Alan Mair Manufacturing Jewellers and Charles Greig to create handmade models for the company's production line.

 

Kapo partnered with a Traditional Chieftaincy Authority called "Bakgatla-BA Kgafela in North-West Province (South Africa) sitting on the richest Platinum Deposit in the world and opened the world's first "Platinum Jewellery Beneficiation Project" called "DIBENYA" to turn platinum from the ground into finished jewelry masterpieces through his company Akapo Jewels (Pty) Ltd. De Beers (South Africa) commissioned him to create an 18 CT yellow gold and black diamond choker for Gary Player's 80th birthday in October 2015.

 

In June 2017, Labi Kapo was one of 12 jewelers chosen to be featured in "The Jewellers' Story, the Real Story" edition of "South African Jewellery News." Labi Kapo was one of six Shining Light Awards-A "De Beers" Initiative judges. Labi Kapo, in collaboration with BAKGATLA-BA-KGAFELA, opened a jewelry retail location in Sandton (Johannesburg) South Africa in 2022.

Mahmud Olayinka Babalola is a savvy businessman and investor. He is the founder and CEO of Encore Restaurant & Lounge in Pretoria. Mahmud earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the reputed University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He arrived in South Africa in 2009 after finishing the National Youth Service Programme. Mahmud began various business enterprises in Nigeria and South Africa after moving to the nation. On November 11, 2021, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mahmud took the courageous move of launching Encore Restaurant & Lounge, one of Pretoria's leading lifestyle bars and supper clubs. Three years later, the Encore Restaurant & Lounge is still performing above expectations.

Barrister Smart Nwobi is a human rights attorney, an activist, and extra-ordinary litigation expert of the common man. He obtained an LLB degree in 2012 from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He received Master's in international law cum- socio-economic rights in 2013 and was accordingly awarded a Master’s degree in law in 2016 by the Prestigious University of Pretoria (UP).

Barrister Nwobi is currently the director and senior Attorney at Nwobi (S) Attorneys Inc, a Pretoria-based law firm. The Nwobi (S) Attorneys Inc is an employer of labour who has various young South Africans, Nigerians, and other African Nationals in its employment both in the academic sector and  legal sectors. Barrister Nwobi is also the Head of legal department at the Dreamfinders tutors college.

Outside of his legal practice, among his sterling achievements is the founding of the National Association of Nigerian Students in South Africa, which he became the first president.

A philanthropist of note, Barrister Nwobi is the Founder of the Mother Theresa ALMS-GIVING FOUNDATION-MTAG; an organisation he founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Consulate's response time to distress calls to issues concerning Nigerians in South Africa is worth commendation.

The Consul General fought tooth and nail to restore sanity with regard to the process of issuing of Nigerian Passport. Under his leadership, the processing time has significantly improved even though there is room for further improvement. Also, the Consul General removed all the excessive charges that Nigerians used to complain about in the past.

As an experienced administrator, the honorable Consul General has introduced a lot of administrative and technological reforms to better serve Nigerians in South Africa. A few examples of such administrative and technological reforms are the introduction of access code technology for passport capturing and access to the Consulate General.

For the first time in the Consulate's history, the Consul General introduced the use of courier services for passport delivery both in South Africa and the SADEC region, which is the Consulate General's jurisdiction. With this, Nigerians are able to save time, risk, and money when applying for passport renewal.

Another major achievement of Consul General Mr. Andrew Idi is his non-political interference within the Nigerian community's political space, unlike his predecessors. The Consul General has given every association an open playing field to perform their functions and duties to their members. He interacts with every association that has something to offer.

The Consul General, Mr. Andrew Idi, had previously served as a diplomat at the High Commission of Nigeria, Pretoria between 2017 and 2020. This gave him the needed insight and experience to administer a complex and complicated Nigerian community, and South Africa as a nation.
